Ten years after

I wrote both of these when I was living on Palm Beach. The only place that could have made it worse, those terrible days before they found his plane, would have been on the Vineyard itself.

I don’t think about their loss as much as I did once upon a time. I’ve worked very hard at pushing all the dead people out of my head. They take up too much space in there, rattling around, distracting, reminding me of all the things I work very hard to forget.

Fawn and her husband always had the best parties, candy bowls full of pills on every available surface. They both ended up in rehab five years later, before divorcing. But they’re fine now, last I heard through the Palm Beach gossip.

Sara, you brought back so many memories with the details and pictures in the second piece. I grew up sailing, with our boat in CT, and my family (parents, sister 3 years younger) used to visit the Vineyard and thereabouts almost every summer between when I was about the age you were in those pictures and when I was a late teenager. I remember the docks in Oak Bluffs and Edgartown (we never docked in Vineyard Haven - I think it was too expensive), and the brass ring, and the candy, and being allowed with just my sister to go have lunch (grilled cheese and chocolate milk) at a cafe somewhere.

Anyway, I realize you were posting for other reasons than your own reminiscence, but thank you. I had a really hard time hearing the news back then too.

Keep up the nice work! Look forward to reading more from you in the future. I think it will be also nice if you add “send to email” tool so people can forward the articles to their friends easily.
